Choosing the Right Therapist for You

For every person with a therapy “success story,” there are many others with less than ideal experiences.

There are dozens of reasons for this; sometimes the therapist and client do not make a good match, or the client does not feel comfortable opening up, or the therapist doesn’t have expertise in the area that the client needs support in. In some instances, the individual isn’t prepared to truly and honestly grapple with what they are struggling, or have struggled, with. In other instances, the therapist may not be able provide resources or coping mechanisms which actually benefit and better the client’s life.

Just as you pick your friends and pick your doctors, you get to pick your therapist.

In the process of hiring our team, we kept this in mind. It was and continues to be a priority of ours to provide a wide range of services, care, and therapies for our varied clients, varied experiences, and varied community. It can be normal to try a few therapists before finding the right one for you, and there’s no shame in that. It can be an exhausting process, but one that will be sure to benefit you for a long time to come.

The right client-therapist fit can be the light at the end of the tunnel; someone to walk the journey with, who understands, and who genuinely wants to see you thrive in every capacity. You shouldn’t dread going to therapy every time, or walk out wondering why you feel the exact same way you felt upon walking in. Even when sessions are tough and bring up past traumas or deep-rooted issues, you should (and can) possess a keen sense that you are in a growth process. No one should feel stagnant in their therapy.

If and when you pursue counseling, whether with our team or with another, we encourage you to feel out who works best for you — because at the end of the day, your therapist is here to serve you. It is okay to admit something isn’t working and to change your situation or treatment. You know you best.
