The Impact of Social Media and the Importance of Self-care

Although always important, it is especially important amidst the current climate to limit time on social media. The pandemic has not only had an impact on our physical health, but has taken a great toll on our mental health. The mind and body connection is even more prominent as we deal with a virus that impacts us physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Social media allows us to stay connected to others during this time of isolation, however, too much consumption can leave us feeling even more drained. Many of us are using technology for many domains of our lives because it allows us to stay connected both in our professional and personal lives. With political tension at its peak and as the virus continues, social media has been a platform for negativity.

During this hard and isolating time, therapy can be the outlet needed. Seeking time out to speak to a professional will help find focus amongst the chaos. Instead of picking up the phone and scrolling through post after post, try taking some time to engage in mindfulness or stretching. These techniques allow the body and the mind to relax, to relieve tension, and to find a focal point.

It is easy for us to get caught up in the negativity, but this time can be used for reflection and exploration. For most of us, this pandemic has been very stressful and anxiety inducing. Those who suffer from mental health disorders have the added element of isolation and fear of the unknown. Self-care is always crucial, but should be highlighted during this unprecedented time. Instead of picking up the phone and scrolling for hours on end, think about taking a walk or taking time to reflect on how you are feeling in the current moment.

Taking care of you should always be a priority.
